A message from the Executive Director
Habitat (Aiken) on the Move
While the economy is in recession, and our funding income is quite constrained, Habitat (Aiken) is taking advantage of this economic downturn by looking into additional approaches and construction initiatives that will help low-income families in resolving some of their housing needs. Habitat’s mission is to provide homeownership opportunities for low-income families to live in affordable and decent housing. While our existing construction program focuses primarily on building new housing units, our mandate does extend to activities other than house construction. So the question arises, “How does Habitat (Aiken) enlarge its “footprint” within the community concerning low-income housing?”
While it is the intention of Habitat (Aiken) to continue its primary focus on building new housing, it is also our intent to explore new initiatives that will address serious needs confronting the low-income housing sector. Such initiatives will include repair and renovation of existing low-income homes to provide safer and healthier living environments. How this will be accomplished financially while keeping in line with our existing operations, is now being considered. One area that is being applied is through the collaboration with other social service agencies and our local government in Crosland Park. Here, Habitat (Aiken) is working with the City of Aiken and other entities and agencies to repair and renovate houses to bring them up to affordable, decent and healthier residential standards.
Some other areas that Habitat (Aiken) is exploring to adapt to the short-fall in funding revenues include grants and State funding for low-income, affordable housing projects. As ‘stimulus’ money becomes available through the SC housing agencies, Habitat is now applying for these funds to buttress on-going operations.
Yes, Habitat (Aiken) is moving on. We are doing what is necessary to maintain our low-income home ownership program at its present levels and, at the same time, expand our outreach to better serve the Aiken community.
I thank everyone who has been volunteering, donating and supporting Habitat (Aiken) over the years. We sincerely appreciate you and want you to continue be a part of our Affiliate’s growth and outreach in 2010 and beyond
Executive Director
